Rob McCord's ad is criticized
Rob McCord has released a new ad questioning Tom Wolf's racial views. The ad mentions Tom Wolf's work as a chairman of the reelection campaign of York Mayor Charlie Robertson in 2001. Robertson was indicted on murder charges of the killing of a black woman during the race riots of 1969 the day after the primary. Robertson was later acquitted. The ad asks why Wolf would ever support a man who was arrested for his role in a race riot as a police officer.
Ed Rendell, former governor of Pennsylvania, was disgusted by the ad and saw it as backstabbing in the extreme. Senator Bob Casey said that the ad was attempting to paint a picture of Tom Wolf as an insensitive racist. He called it "offensive." Wolf's counter ad fought back by featuring Kim Bracey, the current York mayor who is African American. In the ad she says Wolf is a friend and he cares about York.
The article in the Philadelphia Inquirer and is on Philly.com. It was published on May 5, 2014 and written by Thomas Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald's opinion seems to be neutral on the issue. I learned from the article that McCord's ad may hurt him in the end because two famous democrats are horrified by the ferocity of his claims against Tom Wolf. The information in the article may convince some people that the democrats are fighting too much and as a result will be unable to face Corbett in the fall. Some people may choose not to vote for Tom Wolf because of the ad; others may choose not to vote for Rob McCord because of it. By ganging up on Tom Wolf, the democrats may be hurting their chances. Tom Wolf has the highest public approval rating, and he may be the only one who can win against Corbett. Finding ways to bring him down may give Corbett an edge later on. This article may convince those in the democratic party to ease up on the attacks against one another and try to work together.
