SuperPAC to target Tom Corbett on climate change

Link to article: http://www.politicspa.com/pa-gov-environmental-superpac-to-target-tom-corbett/58277/

Summary: A SuperPAC called NextGen Climate Action is a SuperPAC that advocates for politicians who address climate change. The plan of the group is to focus on poorer Pennsylvanians who are affected by pollution as well as young voters who vote infrequently. The SuperPAC consider Corbett to be an extremist on climate change.

The article on Politics PA's website was written by Nick Field and published on May 24, 2014. From the article I learned that Corbett will be targeted by an environmental SuperPAC. The information in this article may be used to show that even though Corbett is running unopposed, he will have to worry about other groups with motivation to expose or attack him. The governor's race might not be as easy as he would have hoped. The author of the article seems to be neutral on the subject, but he does seem to think that Corbett has competition now. The article may benefit Tom Wolf by giving him a key point to mention that Corbett does not believe in climate change. Wolf may greatly benefit from the SuperPAC going after Corbett and he may even address the issue himself.

Does Corbett have a chance?

Link to article: http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2014/05/22/corbett-says-only-approval-rating-that-matters-is-in-november/

Summary: Tom Corbett, in an interview with Paul Martino of CBS Pittsburgh, has said that even though his approval ratings are low he is not worried yet. He believes approval ratings only matter in November, before the election. He has time. During the interview, Corbett refused to talk about following the court's order to allow gay marriage in Pennsylvania. he would not talk about his beliefs on the subject, saying only that they are personal.

Summary: The article on CBS Pittsburgh's website, published on May 22, 2014 and written by Paul Martino was a transcript of an interview conducted with the governor. I learned that Corbett is hesitant to talk about gay marriage and his decision to let the court's order stand. I think this may be because he is trying to bide his time until the election and try his best not to anger anyone until then. The information in this article could be used to show Corbett's election strategy and maybe Tom Wolf could benefit from reading this interview to see how Corbett operates. The interviewer was attempting to get Corbett to talk about his opinions on his low ratings, or to get Corbett to share something new, but was unsuccessful.

Tom Wolf wins primary

Summary: Tom Wolf's spending on commercials to spread his image has paid off. Wolf won the primary after greatly overspending his competitors. He gained 58% of the vote. At his victory rally Wolf publicly criticized Tom Corbett and focused his speech on education reform. Wolf supports restoring funding the money cut from public schools by taxing gas extraction, like all of the Democrats. None of the Democrats lingered on their loss. They all have spoken about defeating Corbett and their willingness to rally behind Wolf to do just that.

The article in the Wall Street Journal by Kris Maher was published May 21, 2014. It was about Wolf's win in the primary election for governor in Pennsylvania. I learned that Wolf's large budget has been attributed to his victory. This information could be used to show that a large budget makes a big difference during elections by helping to spread information about a candidate to as many people as possible. The author of the article seems to be neutral on the subject. The article can be used to show future politicians that they need a lot of support to have any chance of winning elections, or at least a lot of cash.

Where the Democrats stand

Link to article:
http://www.delcotimes.com/government-and-politics/20140518/pa-governors-race-where-mccord-mcginty-schwartz-and-wolf-stand

Summary: The article in the Delaware County Times was published May 18, 2014 by the Associated Press. It is about where each Democratic candidate stands on key issues that many voters will care about. The article is less of a news piece and more of a summary of each candidate's opinions and standings on abortion rights, education, health care, minimum wage and other issues they were asked about during the Pennsylvania Democratic Gubernatorial Primary Debate.

The information in this article could be used to help voters decide on the candidate that best represents their views and opinions. They may change their minds about supporting a certain candidate after reading this article, or it may solidify their opinions before voting. From this article I learned that every Democratic candidate supports raising the minimum wage to at least to $10.10 per hour. The information could be used to show that Corbett's standing on minimum wage, education and natural gas drilling are all opposed by the Democrats. The author of the article does not have an opinion on any of the candidates or at least does not show his/her opinion through any tone in writing. The article could affect people's decisions before they vote in the primary.

Wolf has a lead over the Democrats

Link to article:
http://www.post-gazette.com/news/politics-state/2014/05/14/Poll-Wolf-has-hefty-lead-in-Dem-governor-s-race/stories/201405140156

Summary:
Tom Wolf's commercials are really making a difference in the race. He has vastly more money than his competitors and they can't seem to catch up. Wolf's commercials are likely the biggest reason why he has the majority of support. Television ads seem to still be the deciding factor over radio or online ads used by his competitors. According to a Franklin and Marshall poll Wolf has 33 percent support, Schwartz has 14 percent, McCod 9 percent, and McGinty 5 percent. Tom Wolf appears poised to take the primary.

The article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette by James O'Toole is about Wolf's dramatic lead over his opponents. I learned form the article that Wolf's television ads are the main reason for his prominent image and are likely why he has much more support from the public. This information could be used to compare the various forms of media used by the Democrats to measure their effectiveness. Even though television is more old fashioned than the internet, it still is more effective at spreading advertisements to the public. The author of the article didn't seem to have an opinion on the news. He seems to think that Wolf will win the primary easily. The article may be used to show that future politicians should focus on TV when running ads.

Robert Guzzardi is no longer in the race

Link to article:
http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2014/05/pa_supreme_court_ousts_guzzard.html

Summary: Republican Bob Guzzardi, a previous contender in the governor's race, has been forced to leave due to the state Supreme Court's decision. Without Guzzardi in the race, Tom Corbett will be the only Republican in the race. The reason for Guzzardi's forced departure was his inability to file a statement of financial interests with the state Ethics Commission. Though the likelihood of Guzzardi getting anywhere in the governor's race was very slim, many expected him to be Tom Corbett's competition.

The article in the Patriot-News is about Bob Guzzardi's forced departure from the governor's race. I learned that Guzzardi was the only Republican challenging Corbett. This information could be used to show that Corbett has more of a chance of winning now that he doesn't have to focus on anyone but the Democrats. The author of the article does not seem to have an opinion on the matter. The article is neutral in tone. The article may be used to show that Corbett will have an easier time running in the governor's race.

Rob McCord's ad is criticized

Rob McCord has released a new ad questioning Tom Wolf's racial views. The ad mentions Tom Wolf's work as a chairman of the reelection campaign of York Mayor Charlie Robertson in 2001. Robertson was indicted on murder charges of the killing of a black woman during the race riots of 1969 the day after the primary. Robertson was later acquitted. The ad asks why Wolf would ever support a man who was arrested for his role in a race riot as a police officer.

Ed Rendell, former governor of Pennsylvania, was disgusted by the ad and saw it as backstabbing in the extreme. Senator Bob Casey said that the ad was attempting to paint a picture of Tom Wolf as an insensitive racist. He called it "offensive." Wolf's counter ad fought back by featuring Kim Bracey, the current York mayor who is African American. In the ad she says Wolf is a friend and he cares about York.

The article in the Philadelphia Inquirer and is on Philly.com. It was published on May 5, 2014 and written by Thomas Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald's opinion seems to be neutral on the issue. I learned from the article that McCord's ad may hurt him in the end because two famous democrats are horrified by the ferocity of his claims against Tom Wolf. The information in the article may convince some people that the democrats are fighting too much and as a result will be unable to face Corbett in the fall. Some people may choose not to vote for Tom Wolf because of the ad; others may choose not to vote for Rob McCord because of it. By ganging up on Tom Wolf, the democrats may be hurting their chances. Tom Wolf has the highest public approval rating, and he may be the only one who can win against Corbett. Finding ways to bring him down may give Corbett an edge later on. This article may convince those in the democratic party to ease up on the attacks against one another and try to work together.

Will negative approval ratings hurt Corbett?

Governor Corbett's re-election may be harder than he anticipated. Corbett's public approval ratings are much lower than they were a year ago. A decision he made that seems to have hurt him was decreasing funding for public school districts. These cuts have been severe, leaving many schools with few counselors, nurses, and larger class sizes. A poll by Quinnipiac University taken in February found that more Pennsylvanians disagree with his handling of public school budgets than agree with it. Corbett wants to combat this image by proposing a $240 million dollar grant program for kindergarten to 12th grade schools. Corbett's democratic challengers Tom Wolf, Allyson Schwartz and Rob McCord have made public their disagreement with Corbett's  handling of  public school budgets. They favor disbanding the School Reform Commission, a common view shared by many Philadelphians.

Some say that Corbett will be fine. According to Rob Gleason, chairman of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania, election day is what really counts. He believes Corbett's approval ratings will go up as the election draws closer. Ed Rendell believes that Corbett will have an advantage due to his experience as governor. He will be able to work on his image as a nonpartisan leader while the democrats campaign.

The article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is about Corbett's low approval ratings according to a Quinnipiac University survey.  These results may force Corbett to revise his school budget plan to gain supporters. I learned that Corbett's support may affect his re-election campaign and he may be forced to reevaluate some of his policy or risk losing the election. This information could be used to show that Corbett's decisions are not popular with a majority of the public, and could be used by the democrats to convince the public that Corbett can be defeated. The author of the article favors Corbett and believes that he can overcome his low approval. She thinks the democrats are finding ways to thwart Corbett. This article can have an affect on Corbett's re-election campaign. Public approval is used to measure the confidence people have in a politician. The poll can be used to show that Corbett's time is over and people are ready for a new governor.
